Howdy ..- This is our future - I have watched this Trails Management stuff come from the East like a plague and frankly we are losing big time. Actually can you consider it losing when we don't even put up much of a fight..... Yesterday I spoke with Fish and Wildlife to get the numbers of hunters (279K) and fisherman (662K) in Oregon. These numbers are low as it doesn't take into account the "Pioneers". They are totally unaware of these Forest Service changes. That tells me they have been very successful at keeping public involvement at a minimum. Then we go off squawking like a bunch of banty chickens trying to tell people and honestly I feel like all they hear is "the sky if falling, the sky is falling" and they pay no heed. I don't blame them because common sense tells us it really couldn't be this bad. If it was it would be all over the news and clubs would be freaking out. All is quiet so all must be fine and besides we have other BIG problems to deal with (economy, war, politics, etc). I know I am preaching to the choir but I do feel that once the big bear is poked enough it will wake up. I don't have much faith it will be before the big green gates and signs go up but it will wake up and frankly the Federal government is standing with an unloaded gun when it does. Thankfully in our country the people have the power to change government- and once they get their fill they will. This tide will turn. I believe in Oregon the forest Service is very aware of the size of bear they are poking and at least in the Siuslaw they don't want to poke too hard. Consider there are close to 600, 000 people who participate in OHV activities, 280k hunters, 662K fisherman, who knows how many horseback riders, bikers, hikers, campers, and Sunday drivers there is but Oregon's population is around 2.6 million. Do the math. No one likes to have what is theirs taken away from them. Consider too the economic impact when just the Dunes has 2.7 million visitors per year. We vote, we pay, and we should make it clear who is holding title to our Public lands....
Imagine a forest where no children will play because they are locked out...... please take heed..... the Siuslaw meeting is this Wednesday from 4:00 to 7:00 in Corvallis at the District Forest Service building- hope to see you there. Lindy
