While looking for a motor for my Eagle, I found this and couldn't resist. What with most of the members driving a Jeep of some sort, I felt a bit left behind with having to be so careful of my daily driver. It's an '88, with a '94 4.0L engine with a 4.5" spring lift. Not sure what else, but I will have to do a bit of work on it (blown head gasket) to be able to trail her. If the head is cracked, will probably check a few U-pull it's to get it going full board. Maybe now I can really have a bit of fun out on the trails.

looks like it would do the job. what did you pay for her?
most headgasket issues come from something wrong with the cooling system... plugged radiator, heater core plugged, or possible thermostat. Have the cooling system flow checked and pressure checked, when you take the head off, straight edge the block and head (checking for warpage), then have the head flow and pressure tested for cracks. If all is good, install new gasket set and head.

Got her for $400.
The guy I bought her from was on a trail pulling another guy out of a tight spot and when the bumper flew off, it sheared the lower bolts of the shock and blew the hose on the radiator's resevoir. He didn't notice it til the engine overheated. That's when the head gasket blew. He included the new head gasket in the sale, plus he left the cb with dual antennae and the wiring for 2000 amp stereo system.
It does have an upgraded cooling system in it and will take your advice and check out all the lines before starting her back up again.

I've been digging in my garage for the book I have on Cherokees. I know the torque settings for putting the head back on are listed in it and I want to make sure I do it right. Still have way too much stuff in the garage. UGH. I did get the battery for it tho. Won't have it done it time for wheeling this Sunday, but should have it ready for an April run. I have some heavy duty tires on the Monte now so shouldn't have any flats.

Been tearing down the motor to get to the head. So far have made it to the valves. I've been taking pics as I go so I have some to look back on to check where everything goes once I can put it back together. Learned something new today - I had it in my head that fuel injectors had replaced the spark plugs, wow was I surprised to see the spark plugs, lol.

I was able to remove the head yesterday and start degreasing. Found the spot where the gasket blew. Won't know til Monday whether or not it's cracked. Will let you all know soon.

One of the things I've been researching is shocks. I have to replace the one that sheared off and any advice would be great. I plan on replacing both front shocks at the same time.

Got the news this morn. It wasn't just cracked, it was split on the 3rd cylinder across the top of the head. The machinist says it looks like a freeze crack. He didn't even have to have 20 lbs of pressure for it to start leaking air. ugh.
Lucky for me, he just happened to have another head there in the shop. I should be able to pick it up later today after he transfers the rockers over to the new one.

Ran into a bit of a snag putting the new head in...couple of the bolts are warped. Checked 5 parts stores before I found one that was able to get me a new set. UGH. Hopefully, I'll be able to get her started up next week.

on the shocks, best thing is if you can read the info on the ones you already have is to match them up. If not, contact an off road shop and tell them how much lift you have and the type and they can set you up with the proper shocks.

Got the new head on tonight. Now it's just a matter of putting everything else back together. That will take me longer than taking it apart, lol.
As for the shocks, I'm going to have to go with a different set as he left the old shocks on when he put the 4.5" spring lift in. It sheared the bolts when they overextended, so wrong shocks for the lift.

One more day and I should have it done. Ran into another problem, this time putting the belt back on. Tried everything the books says and when I put it on the right way, I have way too much belt left over. Any ideas??
