Ok, you've seen the pic and right now it's the flintstone car. Took out 2 bushings today using the torch. The outer ring of the bushing is rusted onto the leaf spring so going to get my future son-in-law to take it to his workplace and get them out.
Here's my question tho: When I started looking at the front leaf springs (we put spring over) I found out that one of the leaf springs is totally shot. Other than paying $250 for a new leaf spring, is there a rig out there that I could use a used leaf spring off of. I have to get this movable very soon and hopefully someone will have an answer for me. Thanks all, Wyld

Well, I had my future son-in-law and another friend take a look at the leaf-spring. One says go ahead and put everything back together to get it moved. The other is going to check with a friend who has some scouts and may be he will sell me some used ones.
Going to put the new bushings in tomorrow.

Well, the boys and I decided to give it try and put in one of the bushings last night. We were able to get one almost all the way in, but now we have the problem of getting it in the rest of the way. It's less than 1/4" away from being flush, so any ideas on how to get it the rest of the way in? ? Help is greatly appreciated. Wyld

do you have a press of some kind?

I wish. Been using a bolt and washer system to get it in and about the time it was almost flush, I broke the bolt. Tried it again and broke a second bolt. If I can't figure something out, may ask my future son-in-law to take them to work with him again and press them in all the way.

was going to say that if you had a drill press or something like that you might be able to finish them, if you have not done the second one try putting some liquid soap on the rubber bushing before installing it, this helps it slide together easier

I do have a drill press, but it's power sucks big time. I put grease on the inside of the leaf spring and on the bushing before I did the bolt and washer system. Not sure how to use the drill press to press it all the way in.
Any ideas??? Thanks, Wyld

I have seen people use the drill press to put pressure on the bushings. Do Not turn the power on, most drill presses have large teeth or gears to make the drill go down/up. using the tri handle and moving the drill down sometimes you can get enough pressure to finish the job. hope that helps... or you can have the "future son in law" take them to work again

Will try that. I put another bushing in this morn and ran into the same problem again. Stripped the nut on the bolt and had to use the cut-off wheel to get it off. UGH.

Well, got them in most of the way today. Even got one leaf spring bolted back on the rig. Ran into a problem on the other front one tho, wrong size U-bolt - not nearly wide enough as it goes on a larger part of the axle than the others, ugh. Son-in-law is going to take the other 2 leaf springs to work with him and finish pressing them in. When that's done, I'll actually be able to finish that part of the job. Gives it an automatic lift by putting the spring over too.

Ok, another day and I now have the front leaf springs on. Went to do the back and guess what. To do the spring over, I have to weld on new perches, ugh. I have one perch ready to weld on, now I just have to dig in the garage to find the other one. Also when I went to put the rear spring on, I realized why I purchased 9 bushings. I still have to put one more on for the leaf spring to attach. Ah, the adventures of rebuilding.

Its all in good fun. Building projects are a great way to learn what to do and what not to do. Sounds like your having a few bumps on your build up Wyld but they aint slowing you down none. Just wait to see the pictures of my body work on Mossy this summer. It will be rednecked hardcore.

Looking forward to seeing the changes. Right now the scout is the flinstone car as it has a giant hole where the seats are supposed to be. So guess what I get to do. Take welding classes and buy a sheet metal press.
