The HB 2062, the helmet one is up on Monday.
Hey all, I am not planning on going to the helmet hearing - I said my piece at the last one. I had suggested they consider excluding for loading...they said there were changes but I am not sure what they are. Everyone I have spoken to supports the helmet bill, including me. I have been spending lots of time looking at statistics and it looks like it could really prevent death and injuries. So for any of you who don't like it....you should show up Monday to voice your concern....
It looks like we have some reputable reporters interested in this story from a bigger perspective. I am waiting until we have it all together. Tom and I have been working on numbers.... We are leaving the fight of SB 49 to all of you for a few days... Please keep calling...Most of the Senators are opposed to the bill. We have some information and hope to have lots more in the next day or so. After we can digest it a bit, we will send it to all of you. We have to start over from scratch as it seems there are so many "funny" numbers... We will also try to confirm or deny the latest from Devlin (please see bottom) that ATVs were the third leading cause of death and injury to children in 2005. What I can tell you today is based on a report from Parks using CPSC's statistics, from 1999 to 2004, there wasn't one child under eight killed operating or riding on an ATV. There was a seven year old pedestrian run over by a twelve year old but that was the youngest child. In that five year period there were 3 -10yr olds, 1 - 12yr old, 2-13 yrs olds, 1 -14 yr old, and three 15 year olds that died. So ten total - it makes me question Safekids saying eight kids died in 2005. For more reasons than one I hope it isn't true. It looks like a large majority happened on private property but I won't know for sure until I get the info I am waiting on. So what that means to SB 49 is having an age restriction at age 8 would have saved 00000000 people had it been in place during that time. We also can't confirm the "on adult quads" with the older kids but we all know that most would be on adult quads - Because they don't FIT on the smaller children's version. Most of what I have read has indicated that these accidents are not happening with families riding - but with kids alone. My guess is that is what this research will prove...we can prevent more deaths....safety training including the adult, helmets, SUPERVISION, and citations to parents who disobey the current laws.
WE, all of us, are doing a great job. Patrick was interviewed today by the Oregonian. If you get the Oregonian please keep an eye out and let us know. Tom is a dedicated research maniac...
I actually planted my trees today - my part for the environment...and while I was out in the pouring rain with mud up to my elbows..it gave me time to really think about where we are and what we are doing. Senate Bill 49 has done some great things for us....for me, it has made my circle of friends that much larger...... the passion and hard work you have all done in fighting something that you believe in is inspirational and keeps me going when sleep is so tempting. The good that we are doing isn't in just stopping this bill - it is going far beyond that. We are taking the opportunity to be part of the solution, honestly and with integrity. This group is unselfish, proud, and salt of the earth....together we can do great things..... Bless you! Lindy
Please call Devlin's office and ask him what his source was for the comment in the Statesman Journal that ATVs were the third leading cause of injuries and deaths of children in Oregon.... Please let me know it they tell you!! I tried today and left a message.
