Hey guys - if you are sending to the group you need to update your list... we have added some and Troy Marler needs to be removed - he is with us but doesn't have time to read all the email messages we are sending. I will try to get back to just one update so folks aren't feeling flooded. We have also added quite a few folks to the list...generally it is best if you can forward to your friends rather than me adding on because with too many it spams back to me. Please read my letter to Kyleen at Parks - I hope this represents us all....
Here are some of the stats. we have been working on. The break in the middle is due to previous years having very little info. We had a few years in there with none so you can really play with the percentages. The older section is by date, the most recent is by age. The highest year was 2005 - there is one other fatality for that year that they haven't posted. Most years there are one or two. Hopefully, we can set up a database to more closely track deaths and injuries in Oregon to include supervision data.. This is also what I sent to Parks and the Senators.
************************************************************************************************************
This is the information from 1984 to 2005 from the CPSC with the exception of the supervision portion - we used newspapers, police reports, etc. for that information so it may not be 100% accurate. Please note that the large majority are happening on private lands or illegally on roadways. Supervision and helmets are key to preventing these deaths. Please note no children under the age of 13 have died on public lands so we feel there is no justification for an age limit of 7.

To Kyleen at parks.... regarding working with "ALL" stakeholders - I wanted to clarify our relationship with Safekids...
Hello Kyleen, I reread your letter last night and also had a chance to sleep
on it. You had remarked " I want to assure you that OPRD does intend to
work cooperatively with ALL stakeholders on these issues. I hope you are
sincere in your stated desire to do the same". It took awhile to sink in
and I may be totally off base but I will attempt to address it as it seems
implied.
Collectively we are like a bunch of ranchers (Parks and the user groups).
We ride the fence, care for the cows, buck hay and get it put in the barn.
We do this together side by side. Lately we have had a bunch of cows die
and no one can figure it out - we call out the new vet from the city to
help. Weeks pass, more dead cows. The vet says it may be a virus and there
aint a thing we can do. At this point we are going to have to sell off the
land before we are completely broke. Hard luck. But then one day someone
catches wind that the new vet had all of his college paid for by the very
same guy that has been wanting to buy our land cheap. So the old retired
vet in town decides to head out and see if he can get to the bottom of it.
Sure enough, the pond has been contaminated. Well about now we are a bunch
of very angry cowboys with a lot of dead cows. The new vet is no where to
be found - seems he left town in the middle of the night. You could surmise
he had a part in it - but then again, maybe he just had bad luck and worse
information. With a lot of work and sacrifice we can get back on our feet.
Thing is, it will take each and everyone of us working day and night to pull
through. But it is Parks and our group workin side by side, we eat
together, we bunk together. At the end of the day it is this relationship
that is critical to the future of our sport. Safekids will be long gone
chasing after another "epidemic" while you and I are back at the ranch
fixing the problems.
I can tell you this Kyleen, there is more to meet the eye with that group.
We are very tempted to pursue the relationship with Adrienne Greene as
director of Safekids, and the state employee responsible for the data. It
concerns us when she is telling the media about this "virus" when the water
in the pond is the problem. It is also a concern when information is freely
given and published in the press but not available to us for rebuttal. Look
a little harder and you will find that there are some very creative ways of
playing with numbers and information. Can only part of the story be true
without the other half that is a lie? So this group of cowboys are taking
the high road. We will roll up are sleeves, clean up the pond, and focus on
keeping our ranch secure. As we have invited everyone to the table to share
in our grub, we will not outstretch our hand again when it has been pushed
away. We will not keep putting ourselves in a situation to continue to get
sucker punches in the back as we turn to fix the real problem. We will not
bend to radical annihilation of the very thing our families hold dear. So
at the end of the day, you will have to decide where you will bunk.
Considering we are your customers, it would behoove you to look a little
deeper at the problem. It is plain to see if you want to see it. We won't
bend on keeping our kids involved in this sport because it simply isn't
right. But without the support and conviction of your cowboys, a ranch is
just another chunk of dirt.
Thank you, Lindy
