Before I get too far into this update - I really want to acknowledge one person in particular who has worked night and day over the past several months on Senate Bill 49. Now, he has been working those long days and nights on Senate Bill 101 and the future amendments and bills, training, etc. To say we couldn't do it without him is an understatement. Tom Tobey is a member of Temp. Insandity - He is an instrumental part of our group. If you know him please thank him - and if not I am sure you will have a chance in the future because he has committed to the long haul. The list of additional folks who have poured hours and heart over the last few months is long - many of these are known only by their nicknames.....and these folks I thank to. Maybe at the end of the day when we have everything in its order we will take a bit longer to say thank you to each and everyone of you for all that you have done.....what a difference you each have made!!
Glenn and I met with Senator Devlin and Senator Metzger today. As I had said earlier, I really like Senator Devlin and felt his heart was in the right place. Today confirmed that. As it stands we have everyone working together to find a solution. Senator Metzger is holding SB101 for the changes and amendments that we hope to have made with Parks by the first of April. It is our hope to replace the minimum age with rider fit guidelines, similar to the ones I have sent out earlier. Glenn did a wonderful job at explaining ccs and youth models. It could not have gone better today.
ATVA and AMA have been working very hard at helping us with the language. I would like for you all to consider the significance of being a part of a larger and more powerful organization if you are not already a member. What we are trying to do here in Oregon is groundbreaking. Hopefully we will succeed and be a model for other states to follow.
One of the biggest risks we have now is from within our own group. Several times we have asked for input and many of you have given us lots of great ideas that are being used. We have also gotten opposition and clarification to things and have been able to make adjustments. Tom and I are meeting with Parks and will represent this group to the very best of our ability. We intend to support supervision to age 16 - just as we have done from day one with your support. We will support no minimum age but in its place rider fit. This still means some children will not be able to ride until they are physically large enough to safely operate the ATV they want to ride. They must be able to stand with daylight between crotch and seat, fully turn the steering wheel completely from side to side, and operate all controls. We will support safety training to include hands on for children and we are working really hard at coming up with the best way to train younger children. We intend to keep the family in four-wheeling and motorcycling and to protect our sport from being completely shut down with age restrictions of 12, and as hoped by Safekids -16. If we don't act proactively, we will continue to fight Safekids and other special interest groups until we lose.
So, speak now please - now is the time - The last thing we want or need is to have any of our own group mad because of something they weren't on board with. Please read over SB 101 (keep in mind they are changing the supervision on the same type of veh. portion of it already) and review what we are proposing - no age restriction, rider fit and let us know what you think. Senate Bill 101 is only on public lands. If we don't hear from you we will assume we have your support. Don't bust our chops guys, we are doing the very best we can and we are begging for your input before it is too late for it!!! Our goal is to represent all of us and stay united!!!
Thank you once again - if I haven't said it before, you all mean so much to me.....I love this sport....and I love the many friends I have made on this journey! Lindy
