News10 Sports Melissa Enfield --- SOME OF THE BEST ALL TERRAIN VEHICLE TRAILS ARE RIGHT HERE IN SOUTHERN OREGON AND IF YOU'RE A RIDER YOU'VE PROBABLY HEARD OF SENATE BILL 49 WHICH, IF PASSED, COULD CHANGE THE SPORT. SENATE BILL 49 WOULD PROHIBIT KIDS UNDER THE AGE OF 12 FROM RIDING A-T-V'S. IT ALSO PROPOSES 12 TO 16 YEAR OLDS CAN'T RIDE DIRT BIKES OR QUADS WITH AN ENGINE DISPLACEMENT GREATER THAN 90 CUBIC CENTIMETERS OR CC'S. THE MEASURE IS A RESULT OF AN INCREASE IN A-T-V ACCIDENTS INVOLVING CHILDREN, AND THE BILL HAS MANY PEOPLE ON EDGE.
Kurt Beckman, part-owner of Bike Barn, says "It's something I like to do with my family and if that's taken away, what else, what's next, football, skateboarding."
KURT BECKMAN IS PART-OWNER OF BIKE BARN AND HE SAYS HIS BUSINESS WOULD SUFFER AS WELL. UNDER THE NEW BILL A 12 YEAR OLD COULD RIDE A 50 CC BIKE WHICH IS PROBABLY TOO SMALL OR A 50 CC BIKE THAT MAY BE TOO BIG.
Beckman adds "It just doesn't make sense, you can't regulate it by CC and frankly there shouldn't be any regulation, it should be the parents choice, education is important."
EMERGENCY ROOM DOCTOR CORY BERGEY SAYS BANNING KIDS FROM RIDING HAS POSITIVES AND NEGATIVES, BUT IT ALL COMES DOWN TO ONE THING. CORY BERGEY D.O., AT PROVIDENCE MEDICAL CENTER, SAYS "What we believe in is safety and I don't think it depends on your age if you're a beginner you're riding on the beginning trails or the moderate trails, you're leaving the advanced trails for another day then I think it's adequate and it's safe to do that."
FOR TAMMY SNIDER, WHO RIDES ALONG WITH HER TEENAGE SON, THE PROPOSED REGULATIONS ARE UNACCEPTABLE. "It makes me angry for one because he's ridden since he was six years old and he's a good rider and a cautious rider and he also has his sights set on being a motocross rider and that's a goal for him to work for even if he never makes it, they're taking that choice away from him and that's wrong."
THE BILL WAS ASSIGNED TO A COMMITTEE IN JANUARY, BUT SO FAR NO CHANGES HAVE BEEN MADE.
Thank you,
Collin Summers,
