Folks,
The Forest Service is in the process of reviewing the “trails” in the dunes and we will need to be involved. If not we WILL be seeing trail closures. At this point I do not know what this means but first of all we need to be prepared. If possible, can you forward on this message to everyone you know who rides in the Oregon Dunes National Area? We may be called upon to help set up trails and keep our favorite trails inventoried so they do not close them. I have asked Don Amador, the Western Area Rep for Blue Ribbon Coalition” to send me some information on the Forest Service process and below is that information. The Forest Service is in this process in all of their lands they are responsible for. I am supposed to hear from Sharon Stewart who works out of the Reedsport office. When she contacts me for input I will forward on her message. It should be this month sometime so it is happening now. Sharon also told me that the 15 year review of all the dunes has been postponed until 2012. The last time it was reviewed it was ugly. All of us know that the more gets closed, the more folks ride in a smaller area. The smaller the area; the more accidents: the more accidents; the more laws. It is a vicious cycle and we can no longer, as a group, sit on the side and watch it happen. So far, I believe the Forest Service is very happy with us and will be willing to work with us.
I do have a question? Does anyone know how to get to the data of how many dollars go to the Forest Service in fees in the dunes? Also, how many dollars we (ATV riders) mean to the local economy and to the State? It must be substantial.
Thanks and I will keep you posted.
