This is critical and I really need for you to pass on this information and TAKE ACTION please!!!!! We only have a few weeks to identify and turn in our trail systems. It used to be everything in Federal Forest Lands were open to OHV use - now it is changing to everything is CLOSED unless designated open. They can't designate what they don't know about. Don't wait until the closure sign goes up on your favorite riding area. We stand to lose riding areas but we don't want to lose anything mapping may save. Please pass the word and encourage everyone to get involved in their own riding area.
I had a wonderful meeting with the Siuslaw folks and since they don't have all trails mapped they need our help to get them mapped. This is a copy of the press release - they have had little response from the user groups...not good. It went well and we enjoyed meeting with Joni, Mike, and Kathy. A big thanks to Ron (Mt. Baber) for being my guide!! I explained that very few riders were aware of these changes and they explained they have contacted papers, stations, etc. to get the word out. So we will give it another try!
Since I just got home I really haven't had a chance to put together a summary of our meeting. Bottom line is we need to map the trails and make comments on the "areas" that we ride in. If anyone rides in the Hebo area they really need help there. In the meantime I am going to check around to see how we can do this - can we use Garmin, Magellen, and all the other hows and whys in this process. My guess is each District may be different than the next. I will call tomorrow and let you all know what I find out... Meanwhile - please pass this information on regarding the process. Many hands make light work!! Following is note with updates from Randy..... Thank you, Lindy

There is Still Time to Provide Input Into
The Siuslaw NF Travel Management Planning Effort
Corvallis, OR – It’s not too late for the public to provide input to the
Siuslaw National Forest’s Travel Management planning effort. The first
phase of public involvement continues through July 31, 2007.
This phase of public involvement is important to help the forest
“round-out” its inventory of areas that have historical motorized use,
including dispersed campsites. “Forest maps are displayed at all Siuslaw
National Forest offices in Waldport, Florence, Reedsport, Hebo and
Corvallis,” said Mike Harvey, Recreation Staff Officer. “The public is
encouraged to come in and mark on the maps and show us the areas they use.
This will help us when we analyze which forest lands and roads would be
open for motorized use.”
This effort is in response to the July 2004 Travel Management Rule
issued by the Forest Service. All national forests in the country will be
going through a travel management planning process to designate roads,
trails and areas that will be open for motorized use. Each forest will
publish a Motor Vehicle Use Map by 2009 to show designated routes and
seasonal restrictions. Under the Travel Management Rule only those routes,
areas and dispersed camps displayed on the Motor Vehicle Use Map will
remain open for motorized use. Roads, trails and areas not designated as
open, will be closed to motorized use.

Willamette is mostly already done with Santiam & Huckleberry OHV areas already plotted, and now are fighting with NEPA studies to continue to hold onto these areas. This forest seems to be far ahead of the rest.
